So Madonna and Guy Ritchie confirmed what has been rumoured for months - they are getting a divorce.

Tell me, is anyone surprised?

Oh wow, I seriously thought they already announced this and it was getting close to being final.........so no I am surprised over that, more over the fact that this marriage lasted that long.

The high profile lifestyle makes marriage extremely difficult. Imagine going in front of thousands of fans who worship you, applaud and scream for you, telling you have awesome and wonderful...and then coming home to a spouse who doesn't applaud you but who expects you to help with the kids, or jump into domestic stuff. And so, many simply go on to the next person thinking that the problem was they hadn't yet met Mr/Ms right. It's just difficult to make a commitment to marriage, when your career demands a greater commitment.

I agree, being under a microscope all the time has to make for a very stressed home life and relationships. Especially if you are always worried about what they all with think.

I hear that, but it irks me that these people jump into marriages without giving it a long-enough consideration. And then they bolt at the first sign of struggle.

Marriages aren't fairytales. They take work. And I wish more celebrities would acknowledge that BEFORE they plan their fantastic, secret beach weddings!

I don't know how they always expect things to be picture perfect and bail when it isn't.

Part of the reason they do that is becuase they CAN. They are wealthy, have a constant support group of friends and counselors around them. For most of us, divorce is a financial liability. Its a social upheaval, and constitutes a devastation in our lifestyle. In short, many stay together becuase it is too expensive in terms of emotional damage, finances, and family fallout to consider. But with wealth, walking away is much easier. That doesn't make it right, but those inbuilt checks on reality that most of us have just aren't there.

And the sad part is their kids are just like everyone else's parents who get divorced and it seems like they are never considered in the process.

Not really. And I DO NOT blame fame/celebrity for it either. There are plenty of couples who have been married for a long time in spite of their fame,,,most recently we heard about how long Paul Newman & JoAnne Woodward were married. Tim Robbins & Susan Saradon and Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell (though not "legally married") have been together for decades. I think it's because they work it.

Also I think it's really a decision you make. I made up my mind, as did my hubby, that once for us is enough. I have seen people spend months/years planning their wedding ceremonies, but it NEVER enters their head to maybe just maybe work on their relationship instead. They end up paying for years & years on a marriage that lasts 6 months to 1 year. PATHETIC!!

Attached is a pic from H's & my wedding. I planned the wedding in 2-1/2 months & we have been together for going on 20 years. Whatta couple of kids we were! It's my parents that are with us. Mom's still here, but Dad passed away 1 week after their 51st anniversary. That's how you make a marriage!!! ;-)

That is wonderful! Yeah I don't think they understand that it is something you work at, not something that magically stays great all those years. But the effort you get out is the effort you put in as my grandmother always said.
