When Do You Clean?
FamilyHost_Cheryl - May 21, 2009
A few friends and I were having lunch recently and we got onto the topic of cleaning when our husbands were home. One said that she will never clean when he is home because she was brought up that cleaning happened when the "man of the house" was at work because if he was home while cleaning happened it would be more stressful for him. My other friend likes cleaning when her husband is home because she said since they both work full-time he should see that it is a joint effort to clean the house. I prefer to clean in the early morning while my husband and kids are either asleep or not home. The kids cleaning downstair quite often and I save some jobs for my husband to do that I just am too short for without dragging a chair around. He prefers to do laundry and so I let him have at the laundry any time he wants to. How do you handle cleaning in your house?

Joint cleaning is the best way to go if both partners work. If one works and the other stays home, then the other should do the bulk of the cleaning just because she/he has the time. But to get to that point, an open and honest conversation about the division of labor and who is responsible for what should happen.

Seeing I am usually at home alone during the week I handle it alone. On the weekends I will do the cleaning while hubby does the cooking. It works for us :)

To clean in front of him or not to clean in front of him? That sounds crazy to me! We clean together. We get the kids in on it also! The best of our cleaning comes right before we have parties or guests over!

We clean when I have the time and the energy. Generally I clean in the morning before lunch and naptime. My husband is in charge of the bathrooms, so a lot of times he'll clean right before our son's bathtime. He gets the bathtub ready and spiffs up the rest of the room.

I'm with you, Annabelle. I tend to have the most energy in the early morning between 7-9, and the kids are more likely to keep themselves busy playing so I can get it done faster. I have to save some jobs for the weekend and we either work together as a family or my son helps out to earn his allowance.
