Toys Toys and more Toys
tmocaby - April 21, 2009
I need to clean my son's room and get rid of a lot of toys. I hate to say it but my son is very spoiled and while it's great that he has so many people that love him it causes way to many toys to pile up. I dont even think we know whats hiding in his closet. Any advice on how to sort the toys and how to get rid of toys and how to organize the rest. Im so overwhelmed on how big this job is going to be I need all the help I can get. Thanks!

I had to do this type of clean up several times having three kids. My mom gave me the best advice, look at what they are playing with and those are the toys to keep. I just bought the sweater boxes that slide right under their bed and stored the toys in those. Then you box up what is left, if they ask for it within a certain amount of time let them have the toy back and if not, either donate it to a church or have a garage sale.

I agree! I look at what they're playing with most, then I stash away the other toys into plastic containers. I hide them in closets and the basement, then pull one out every once in a while (on a rainy day, snow days, etc.). They play with them like they're new.

Of course, you should go thru once in a while and get rid of anything too babyish, but I find that especially after a holiday or birthday, I can clear out a bunch of toys into bins and no one notices.

One of the great things about toys is that they stimulate the imagination. However, the more sophisticated the toy, the less imagination is required. In addition, my grandkids have so many toys, no one can keep them straight. It's probably not a good thing to teach our kids that the world is a place with a limitless supply of fun things to have. We did the yard sale route periodically along with donations to Good Will if our kids didn't show interest in a toy after 3-4 months.

When my girls were little, for Christmas and birthdays, they would get so much stuff. We would open maybe half at the time and then save the rest for later. I found that "out of sight, out of mind" is completely designed for children. Usually they'd forget all of the presents they received and we could save the rest for later as regifts or donation items for our church or I'd take it back for clothes/shoes that they could put to better use. I know that may sound a little ungrateful but I just couldn't justify opening all those toys just to have them lost under the bed two months later.

I did the same as you, GinaVA3. I'd rotate their toys in and out of storage when they were getting bored with them and they did play with them like they were new again.

tmocaby-if you are looking to thin out the collection of toys and get rid of some there are some great places you can donate them. One of my favorites is the local women's shelter and another is the children's floor of the hospital.

What I do when they start to get all the toys piled up, I like to pick all the toys that are damaged, broken or faded and throw them away. What I do with the rest is pick what I think they still like and still play and the rest I donate them or leave them outside the our house so anybody can come and take them. I like to do this when the kids are in school because if I do this in front of them they will start picking the toys out of the box and put them back into the toy pile, and doing it this way they will not even notice what I threw away.
