Organizing Kids' Rooms
FamilyHost_Cheryl - October 01, 2008
For such little people they sure do have a lot of stuff and it can grow out of control quickly. What tricks have you found to keep your children's rooms in order. Do you use cubbies or shelving units? Have you found a way to maximize closet space? Share your tips as well as your questions here.

My kids also "have a lot of stuff" as you say. I've been struggling to find a maintainable well-organized storage solution for it all, and we're finally getting there. Since my kids are quite young, their "stuff" mostly consists of small toys. To maximize their closet space, we installed additional shelving from Home Depot. We've lined many of the shelves with various sized plastic tub containers (adding a label to indicate what belongs in each). To maximize the use of the space in the bins, we sort the groups of little toys within using see-through zip-close mesh fabric bags (www.KidsKlutterKatchers.com), which has also significantly reduced the chaos. Anything that doesn't fit in the closet is a candidate for purging.

With my first born I purged... constantly, after a year each toy that came in one left and anything he didnt play with or even acknowledge was given to another family member (I have 4 brothers... all with small children so everything ended up being shared). With my second son Im finding that We have only bought him 3 toys (albeit that other family members have bought some) and for him we've stuck with things that grow with him and fold up easily/ convert into something else etc. Our swing is also a highchair, our excersaucer is a play table etc. its worked great so far. Now with my Third on the way and my second not even being a toddler I will retain use for all of his infant toys.

I find that the kids rooms need a major hauling every month or so. I need to do it again real soon .... closets are next!
