Getting Organized - Project #1
FamilyHost_Cheryl - January 04, 2009
Let's tackle those holiday decorations this week. If you aren't ready to take yours down, just plan along with us so you are ready when your family is ready to take yours down.

One source of frustration is the big old ball of lights that happen when you take the strands down and toss them into a box. I'm thinking of making cardboard spools to roll mine onto this year. How do you pack away your light strands?

Ornaments are one thing that my kids are meticulous about when they take the tree down. Each child likes to hang their own ornaments and so each one packs their own ornaments up in their own boxes. Do you combine ornaments or separate them by child?

If you have multiple boxes of holiday decorations, how about taking a picture of the decorations and posting it on the outside of the box? That way you'll know what is inside and it is handy if you are looking for something and don't want to drag all the boxes out and dig thru them.

What else should we add to this week's holiday clean-up project?

I need to still go through the things I did not put up this year and pay them forward to someone else. I have a local mission in the area that is my favorite place to donate

Somewhere on this site, Back in Nov. I read to make a typed list of what goes in what plastic bin and put it on the bin. So that after Christmas it made packing up easier. Well, with all that happened in my house this season that didn't happen!

For lights, I have lots of cardboard - some it from the totes. Some of them come with dividers for ornaments, I never use the dividers, but that cardboard is heavy. It would be great for wrapping your light around it.

I'm taking down the village slowly. I'm making a list as to what goes in what plastic tote for the village this year. I'm tired of trying to figure out how to pack that down!! I just have to go out and get about 3 more tubs!!

All other Christmas is down, NY decor is down. Now to get Valentines up! It never ends here!

I was done all my undecorating just before new Years day. I wrap the lights around the tubes that gift wrap come in, they keep the lights from tangling, then wrap an elastic around the end of the strand of lights. I am going to label all the decorations that are keepers for the kids in their own boxes next year, as we do an ornament every year, but running out of room on the tree. I have rubbermaid tote boxes, labelled, but the picture on the box of what it contains is a simple, but great idea! i will keep that in mind next Christmas! Thanks for the great ideas!

I have a feeling that with my kids getting older, my decorations will get less and less :(

all the ornaments we have are combined.the individual itself has the kids name on it.rubbermaid containers store everything but the fiberoptic tree.and they are labled simply "christmas decos".its fun to be surprsed the following year as they are being unpacked.

We have a special box for all tree ornaments/lights/etc... We drew a picture of a Christmas tree on the front so that we'd know what that box was. My other Christmas decor boxes are all unlabeled due to the fact that every year I pack them differently. When we decorate we take them all out and put everything up (I do label my boxes what holiday they are for though) We wrap our lights around cardboard to keep them front getting tangled.

I took an old lid from a broken rubbermaid box that I wrap the lights around and tape the end. For the rest I have several boxes, tree ornaments, outdoor decor, table decor, wreaths, candles, etc. and I just placed a label with the content outside of the box. So far it has worked great for us.

Ever thought of using zip ties for your lights? It really makes it easier since they dont end up wound together.
I have clear ornament boxes that have five layers. Holds a lot of ornaments and you can see whose box is whose. Soory, cant post any photos, we took our decorations down a while ago. But I can help with ideas!
