Dryer Fires
FamilyHost_Cheryl - January 24, 2009
I was reading an email that had a really good message that I wanted to pass along. It said that many dryer fires are caused by a filmy build-up in the lint filter. The film is from those fabric softener dryer sheets and that it recommended we wash the lint screen with hot soapy water and a scrub brush at least every six months. Apparently just removing the lint from our screens is not enough enough to keep us safe. So, please go clean your dryer filter this weekend. I'll be doing mine right after work today.

I also heard about this! Scary! I also check the outside exhaust vent to make sure it is free of lint and the air is coming out normal. I clean it with a lint brush once a month. A good sign to look for, if it takes your clothes longer than normal to dry.

Thanks for reminding me about the outside exhaust vent. I know that my husband does it in the summer, but I'll have him start going out there during the months it isn't so nice outside.

Oh that is so scary. I will be doing mine tomorrow. As for the outside vent, we pass ours on our way to the car, so, I clean it out as I walk passed it. LOL, Hubby just thinks I'm neurotic, wait until I show him there IS a reason for it. We just won't tell him I learned why!?!

Cheryl, Before I read this, I had a strange smell coming from the laundry room. I thought I had a dead animal back there! Seems last week when I DEFROSTED the Deep Freeze, the piece of carpet under my W/D got wet!! Kevin was finally home last night. we moved the W/D and he picked up the carpet. OMG! Here is the picture of the floor - I'm NOT, repeat not happy about this, but this can also lead to fire hazards. The amount of dust/lint that I swept up filled a folding dust pan 2 times!

I also found $2.29 in coins! I had to put on plastic gloves and sift thru the lint, and wash the coins, I took a picture, but can only attach 1. Look out Sonic Happy Hour, here I come!!

Think I have our next project for you :)))

OMG Carrie, you are very lucky that carpet was wet or it really could have been dangerous! LOL, we must be on the same wavelength though. I just told Mike last night he needs to pull out the w/d this weekend so I can clean behind them. Now, there will be NO getting out of it!

I know it is a hassle and hard to remember. I went outside today and nearly froze to death but I got it done :)

Thank God you caught it in time! I am also worried about clothing items that might find their way back there. I will have to check behind mine this weekend to make sure!

Giggles, so true. The black hole for socks is under the w/d!! You know when you can't find the sock mate?? I found several socks, hair scrunchies that at one time belonged to my daughter, several buttons, a few magnets, and a couple of cloth head bands! A fire waiting to happen. Not to mention about 35 hangars, that my husband had to pick up before we got the piece of carpet pulled out!

And, I don't want to think about mold, mildew, and health problems that could have come from that!! Anyway, as soon as the weather warms back up, the carpet will be cleaned outside with the hose!. Thanks for your concern.

Thanks for the visual, Carrie. So, it's a good thing that you defrosted that freezer, even though it caused the dead animal smell. Yes, all the more reason for us to keep doing these weekly projects. I'm glad we're all getting this fire hazard taken care of.

I did check mine today and only found one hair elastic from my daughter, one sock and a quarter. I went ahead and cleaned out the lint tray and outside vent again to get everything to the same time frame. I will do it again at the end of next month!
