Special treats for our furry friends!
FamilyHost_Annabelle - August 19, 2009
We know what kinds of treats we and our families like, but how about our pets? Most dogs I know (we live in a "doggie" neighborhood) love coming here because they know that something nice is waiting for them at the top of the stairs (treat recipe is below). During the holidays we make treats for the neighborhood pets and deliver them when we deliver holiday treats to the neighbors. Do you make treats for your furry friends? Share your recipes and gift giving ideas here!

Doggie Treats

4 cups whole wheat or all purpose flour
2 cups cornmeal
2/3 cup wheat germ
1 1/2 tablespoons beef bouillon powder
1 teaspoon yeast extract (adds additional meaty flavour)

2 eggs
2 tablespoons cooking oil
1 1/2 cups hot water

Mix first five ingredients together in a zip top bag, add eggs, cooking oil and hot water. Squeeze air out of the bag and squish well to mix. Roll out on a well-floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into shapes (I used a bone shaped cookie cutter). Place on ungreased baking sheet (I use non stick). Bake in center of the oven at 275 F for about 2 hours until the treats are dry and very hard. Let them stand overnight to dry thoroughly. Makes 20 big dog treats and 30 puppy treats.

We don't have too many dogs in the neighborhood but we do have cats. I make these treats for my own cat just so I know what ingredients they're eating.

Cat Cookies

Ingredients
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup soy flour
1 cup wheat germ
1 cup dried catnip
1/2 cup canned tuna (water packed) -- well drained
1 cup juice from drained tuna -- Add water if needed
1 cup corn oil
1 egg -- lightly whisked

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix together dry ingredients, then add remaining ingredients and stir to form a stiff dough. If the dough seems to sticky, add a little more flour. Roll out to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into shapes with animal shaped cookie cutteusing cooking cutters (we have one that looks like a mouse). Bake on an ungreased baking sheet (we use non-stick) for about 25-30 minutes. Store in a plastic bag
in the fridge.

I have not made treats for animals before but it sounds like something that could be fun to do for Halloween or something.

What a great idea! Do you make treats for Fufu with sweet potatoes as well? Does she like them raw or cooked? We love sweet potatoes and have them on hand all the time, so making doggie treats with them would be fun and convenient. :)

We do it around Christmas. Instead of sending holiday cards to my neighbors, we make bread wreaths for the neighbors. Most of the neighbors have dogs or cats, so we started making homemade pet treats and putting them in a container that their humans can use after the treats are gone. We also keep treats on hand because we never know if one of the neighbors is going to want to stop by for lemonade while they're walking their dogs.

True.... but Milk Bones come from a box. Homemade pet treats come from the heart. :)

A dehydrator would keep the kitchen from heating up during the summer. Good idea!
