Cool summer beverages
FamilyHost_Annabelle - July 05, 2009
In the dead of summer when you're outside and the heat is bearing down on you, there's nothing like a tall frosty glass of lemonade (recipe below). It's the one summer drink that all of our household likes, which is what prompts me to make it from scratch frequently. But lemonade isn't the only summer refresher in our fridge. Iced tea, coolers and shakes have their rightful place as well.

What are your favorite summer beverages? Tell us about them, and if you have recipes, send them along!

Old Fashioned Lemonade

Ingredients
6 lemons
1 lemon for garnish
1 cup white sugar
6 cups cold water

Directions
Wash lemon skin thoroughly. Juice the lemons to make 1 cup of juice (roll lemons first to make squeezing easier). In a gallon pitcher combine 1 cup lemon juice, 1 cup sugar, and 6 cups cold water. Stir well so sugar can dissolve. Adjust water to taste. Chill. Serve lemonade over ice. Add lemon slice for garnish.

In my house it's not summer without lemonade and iced tea. My daughter LOVES lemonade I just have to be sure not to get any pulp in it. My son is a big iced tea fan and my step daughter loves both. Me personally I'll take an ice cold glass of water with lemon, oh so very refreshing!

I have to agree with everything you said, Katrina. I love lemonade! I always make extra lemonade so I can make lemonade ice cubes. I use them in my iced tea!

Sun tea is our big thing for us. You take cold water and tea bags and put them in a glass jar. I put the jar outside and the sun heats it up and brews it. It saves us having to heat up the house with boiling a pot of water.

My husband swears it tastes better that way but somehow only with the summer sun. Whatever.... haha. Either way, we like it.

Yum! Jennyboots, have you ever used mint in your lemonade? The day before you plan to drink the lemonade, measure out the sugar, put a sprig of mint into a zip top bag and pour the sugar over the mint. Seal up the bag and let it sit in the refrigerator for a day. Then make the lemonade as usual. If you like a stronger mint flavor, leave the sprig in the lemonade (just don't serve it).

I was visiting my sister last night and she served delicious raspberry iced tea! I asked her for the recipe, and she said that all she did was combine one packet of sugar free lemon flavored iced tea mix with one packet of sugar free raspberry drink mix and voila! Sugar free raspberry iced tea!

Another beverage we really enjoy during the summer is a frosty citrus cooler. I make up the base mixture and keep it in the fridge for when we want something bubbly and refreshing. The recipe for the base is 3 cups orange juice, 1/4 cup lime juice, 1 small jar maraschino cherries with the juice. Shake mixture well and chill. Fill a large glass with ice cubes and pour citrus base mixture halfway. Then add whatever carbonated beverage you like - lemon-lime soda, ginger ale, or seltzer. Fish a cherry out of the base container and garnish.

This base also makes a great base for a punch bowl. Just double or triple the recipe and add the soda just before serving. Throw in a ring of sherbet if you like. ;-)
