2009 marks the 2009th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Throughout the year, Washington is planning events and celebrations to commemorate our nation's 16th president.
What important facts will you teach your children about President Lincoln? Is there anything you'd like to bring them to DC to experience firsthand?
Lincoln opposed the Mexican-American war, believing that we were land grabbing by pushing Mexico into war over Texas. (he was right) I love all the adversity he overcome to get to the White house. The war changed him. At the beginning of the war, he thought the slavery issue was best settled by sending slaves to Liberia or other African places. But his thinking morphed, and the Emancipation Proclamation was the result. He was a good man, but the circumstances of his Presidency caused him to do things that are considered great. Not acceptable?
In most polls taken, Lincoln is considered the best President in US History. I wonder how he would fare if he were President today. Would he be a success or would he be villified in the press in the same manner in which he was attacked in the press of his day. Not acceptable?
