Helping with Schoolwork
FamilyHost_Tom - October 30, 2009
It's quite a shock when our children bring home schoolwork and we find that the educational system has evolved a great deal since we were in school! However, we can share the learning process with our children. Do you let your child know that you are available to help out? Do you ask to check their work each evening? How involved are you in your child's homework.

My oldest is 2 years old, so I haven't had the opportunity yet. But I'm sure my time will come!

You mean he's not enrolled in pre-pre-pre Kindergarten? he he he! I can see that coming. Yes, you'll have your chance, and I hope you'll enjoy it. I did really well until about 3rd grade when I began to realize that the educational approach had REALLY changed, and that I would soon cease to be a reservoir of knowledge for my kids.

I have a cousin with kids that are in high school now and just hearing the stories of what projects were coming home terrified me. It's a totally different experience than two page book reports that I remember.

I would like to think that when we get to the homework stage that I will be an active participant in all of it. I will want to check their work and help them figure out the issues together. I'm really looking forward to some of it because there's a lot that I don't remember - from grammar to science - that this will obviously be a helpful refresher on.
