How do you organize your coupons?
FamilyHost_Annabelle - July 21, 2008
I thought it might be a good idea if we shared how we organize our coupons. I have an index card file box with dividers that separate the categories (dairy, cereal, canned good, and so on) and I put the ones that will expire soonest in the front of the stack. How about you?

I had a coupon holder that was like a long wallet and it had dividers... canned goods, cleaners, etc...

I used to have one of those, but it kept slipping through the metal rods of the shopping cart, so I got an index card box that's sits in the "seat" part of the cart. I don't think the coupon holder would have slipped if I had put more coupons in it!

I tried several different methods and finally decided to stick with something simple: I place the coupons--in alphabetical order by product name--into an accordian style file holder. When possible, I review sales flyers and pull the coupons that match sale items in the flyer *before* I go to the store. It is much easier than sorting through everthing as I go.

Hi Temberton! Filing coupons alphabetically by name of the product is a great idea, as is pulling the coupons ahead of time. I don't do that all the time and sometimes spend more time in the store than I want to because I'm busy hunting for coupons in my overstuffed coupon box. Thank you for the great ideas! Maybe next time I can try to finish shopping in under an hour. ;-)

My method is not pretty (see photo) but it works well for me. I have a long accordion folder, and since there weren't enough tabs I use index cards upright to sub-categorize each section. In the very front, I have an envelope for each of the three grocery stores in my area. If I have any store-specific coupons, they go there, and then each week as I go through the weekly ads making a list, I put the matchup coupons in the envelope. Then I only need the envelope and my list when I go to the store.

Oh, I should add this to my method. We don't subscribe to the paper, so I don't often have the opportunity to sort through eveything before I go to the store. But,the other day, I took my daughter out with me and, as I pulled in front of each store, she jumped out and got the flyer for me. We have Kroger, Food Lion, Kmart, Walgreen's, and CVS all in the same area, so it was not a lot of driving around. Then, we went to the library for a while. While there, I scoured the ads for those perfect bargains. :o) I shopped at one store later that day and hit some of the others on different days. We live in the county; so, if we have to go to town for *anything*, I usually stop at a store to shop while in town. Lately, it seems like I've had to go to town every day. LOL! I've already hit every store Iisted above, except Kroger (plus I went to Wal-mart too).

I'm with Temberton - having dividers for the various store coupons is a great idea! I have a stack of coupons that I've been getting at the checkout with my receipts, and this would be a great place to put those coupons.

I use a three ring binder with baseball card holder inserts (very visual system.) Each week I clip the food coupons and file them in sections (store specific, dairy, produce, meat, bread, condiment/sauce, canned, mix, cereal, snack, drink, frozen, paper/plastic, other (things we use often like laundry, dish soap, batteries.) I used to clip all coupons and had a second binder for non-food items. Since my stockpile for those items grew quickly, I havn't needed to purchase any of those items for months. I save the unclipped coupons by date in file folders and leave at home. The binder balances open on the seat of the grocery cart. This especially works great for me on triple coupon days.
I don't mind the clipping and filing while watching TV in the evening; on occasion my teenagers will help. While filing new coupons I toss the expired ones and remind myself of what coupons I have for often used items. Makes match-ups easy because I know what I have in my binder.

6parkers, I'm in your boat--the binder thing's the only thing that's really worked for me. I always hated rifling through the little card files, and inevitably they'd get left at home... Temberton, for you---I don't subscribe to the newspaper either--I tend to only go and get it on Sundays, for the coupons, or maybe occasionally on Wednesday, when the ads come out--but if you go to sundaysaver.com, you'll find the weekly ads for tons and tons of stores--there are only 2 in our area that aren't posted on their site, they have great resources. Then you just pull it up at home, pick out the stuff you want--and it's easier to compare them if you're not scattering 6 different fliers across a table--make your list, and you're on your way. I found this about a year ago, and it's been great when I've been too busy--or lazy, or forgetful!--to get out and go pick up the ads... Hope this helps!
