Competitor's Coupons and Price Matching
CouponsCoach - June 03, 2009

In my post Beginner Coupon Strategies:
http://family.go.com/community/groups/coupon-clippers-grp/beginner-coupon-strategies-6305/,
I mention how important it is to know your store's policies. Let's focus on two policies that can help you save a lot of money when shopping around town:

1) Some stores accept competitor's coupons. Did you know that Home Depot and Lowe's both accept competitor's coupons? This works well for me because Lowe's is over 20 miles away, while Home Depot is right down the street. It saves me both time and money to shop closer to home and I can still use a Lowe's coupon, like this printable 10% off:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=pg&p=/moving/Coupon_Registration.html&ln=cstln4&drd=drd7&ln=cstln4&drd=drd7.

Its worth keeping an eye out for coupons from smaller chains like Ace Hardware, Menard's, Sears, and True Value, even if you don't normally shop there, because you can use them at the larger stores. Right now, theres a printable $5 off $25 coupon at True Value Hardware good through July 31:

Even grocery stores accept competitor's coupons. Here in the Mid-Atlantic, our Giant stores will accept product coupons (such as .50 off X product) from Safeway or other competitors. Some chains, like Harris Teeter and Super Fresh, will accept $$-off coupons, such as the $5 off $25 purchase coupons that some stores print in the newspaper. In the south, Publix Stores policy is: We accept traditional supermarket competitor coupons. Please see your store manager for more details, as there is no written policy on this.

2) Price Matching saves you time and money. With price matching, you bring one store's ad into another store. With the current economic downturn, many stores are offering price matching because they want your business. It's worth asking your store manager or Customer Service desk because it may be a new policy. Here are some national examples:

~Home Depot Price Match Guarantee--If you bring another store's ad in to the Home Depot, they will beat the price by 10%. This can add up to a lot of savings with appliances:

~Best Buy Price Match--Ive taken a competitor's store ad into Best Buy and done this right at the register. I was looking for a video game that was priced so low at K-Mart that it was sold out. I went over to Best Buy, where the item was not on sale (so there were plenty in stock) and showed them the K-Mart ad. The cashier rang the game up at the lower price.

~Target Price Adjustment--Have you ever flipped through the Target ad on Sunday morning just to see that an item you just purchased is now on sale? Take your receipt (not the product, just the receipt) to the Customer Service desk within 14 days of purchase, and you will receive a price adjustment.

With any store, if there is not a printed policy (often found in the weekly ad or on the website), call ahead or ask a manager at the store to confirm the policy before you begin shopping so youre not surprised at the register.

Do any of the stores in your area accept competitors coupons or do price matching? What is your experience?

A.C. Moore and Michael's accept each other's coupons. As a preschool teacher, that can be helpful if one store carries a specific craft item that the other doesn't.

Also, Buy Buy Baby is owned by Bed, Bath and Beyond. They will accept the Bed, Bath 20% off coupon that frequently arrives in your mail.

Buy Buy Baby will accept Babies R Us coupons and vice versa.
