College Student Vote Controversy
FamilyHost_Cheryl - December 04, 2008
In the Minnesota town where I live there is a controversy brewing over the large college student turnout and how they voted heavily to pass the local school district levy to primarily keep class sizes where they are and to not cut out all middle school extracurriculars. Many residents are saying that since college students are temporary residents in the town and do not own property they should have to vote in their home town and these students have no right to vote on anything that is local and going to affect the property residents. Other residents are saying that they respect the student votes and support of the town that they are temporarily calling "home" and that there should be no discussion of their right to vote where they go to school. I'd love to know what you think about this, as you can't pick up the daily newpaper here without another letter to the editor about it.

I think they should vote in their hometown with an absentee ballot... not in their college town where they reside seasonally for just a few years.

I think college students should vote in their jurisdiction of residence. Where is their car registered? What state income taxes do they pay? What address is on their driver's license?

I appreciate students that support their college town so if they've made the town their LEGAL RESIDENCE, than they should be allowed to vote there. I think that's true of anyone - whatever address is on their driver's license is where they should vote.
