This is just a piece of advice for parents, current students, future students, etc. I'll give you some background first and tell the story. I am a 37 year old mother of two, and have been trying to finish my college education for about 4 1/2 years now. First my husband had a massive heart attack and I had to drop out to take care of him, then I got diagnosed with lupus, and liver damage, and both times I had to drop out of those two semesters. I lost my financial aid through that college and had to transfer to another local college, which was a private more expensive college. I fell and broke my leg (both bones and shattered my ankle), and had to have surgery, was in the hospital for over 5 days and on complete bedrest for another 3 weeks. So guess what. I had to drop out last semester too, and I already had 64 credits towards my Bachelors degree.
Why the beware then? Well here's why.... Because of the fact that I was on financial aid and had to go to school on grants and loans, when I dropped out the school had to send back part of the money they I had already received... regardless that it was medically necessary and I provided proof and doctors statements, I've lost my financial aid at the private college and {HERE'S THE BEWARE!!!!}, they refuse to release my transcripts to any place else, so although I'm enrolled back in school for the spring semester I HAVE TO START ALL OVER ON MY DEGREE!!!
I'm not a quitter, and I am determined to graduate college and get my degree as well as show my children that no matter what happens you should never quit and never quit trying to better yourself.
Make sure you know your college's policy on having to drop out of classes and releasing of transcripts, or even re-registering for a new semester. So that's my story, and I'm sorry it's long, but I thought others should know this could happen to them or their children. Not acceptable?

Wow! This is an eye-opening story. I am sorry you had to go through this on top of the medical problems that you and your husband went through. So there is nothing that you can do to have your records released? Is there any kind of higher education authority in your state (like the state department of education) that might be able to help you get that transcript taken care of? Sixty-four credits is a lot to have to redo, in time and expense. Not acceptable?

I have contacted the Indiana Higher Learning Commission, The US Department of Education, State Education Deparments, College Administrators, State Senators, and even emailed the White house. However, due to the way the laws are written, a college can withhold transcripts if you owe them any money, and because of the fact that financial aid has to be sent back to the government if you drop out or below full time, then there is nothing I can do about it. Not acceptable?
