Taking Teens from School for your Cruise
FamilyHost_Tom - 2 weeks ago
Do you believe that the experience of a week long cruise is educational and merits them missing a week of schooling, or do you think that missing school to go on a cruise is not right. In the end, as parent's you'll make that decision. You can read about that issue and other cruising issues at http://www.cruisemates.com/articles/family/familycruisefaqs4.cfm Tell us what choice you would make and why.

Many school districts have a week long spring break or winter break and vacations from school should be planned then. In high school a lot of learning happens in a week and while you can make up the tests and assignments, you cannot replace the learning that happens during oral instructions and class discussions. With the flu going around many kids are already missing a week of school just for that and it cannot be helped. I'm all for planning vacations around the school calendar, except in the case of the lower grades such as kindergarten and first grade where you really will not miss and have to make up as much work.

Education is quite important. Let's see if anyone else has any thoughts on this topic.

i guess the education of a cruise would be where you go and what you actually see while there..i did take my son & nephew out of school for a vacation not to cruise, the schools frown on it but i did send a note to all the teachers asking for work that he would miss. He did a lot of it during travel time and then made up the rest during the week he went back. i guess if you can not book a cruise/vacation during school off time than you have to prepare to make us missed work

And honestly, it might depend upon the student. If the student struggles and lags behind normally, taking them out for a cruise might sound the death knell for their school year. However, if your student breezes for the most part, missing a week won't affect them too much, and the new experiences might prove to be really beneficial to their growth and development.
