Breast or Bottle?
FamilyHost_Annabelle - September 03, 2008
Will you choose one over the other, or will you be doing a combination of both?

Oh there is nothing like the bonding of breast feeding... it is the best feeling in the world! And it's healthier for the baby!

I loved the bonding of breast feeding. I also treasured the bonding I had with my pillow when I pumped and let hubby feed the hungry baby from a bottle at 2am. ;-)

Hi everyone! I'm trying to convince my cousin, who is due in about six or seven weeks, that she should try breast feeding, but she's determined that she's going to do formula and bottles so that anyone can feed the baby. I don't want her to miss the breast-feeding experience. What can I say that's not totally offensive, and yet is enough food for thought so that at least she'll consider it?

Try and ask her to try it... not only is it best for baby, in this economy the price can't be beat!

I would just ask her if she thought about the benefits of breast feeding and that she can also pump her milk so that someone else can still feed the baby when she is not up to it. Hope it helps!

She may be intimidated by the idea of breastfeeding. You can acknowledge that it can be a hard first few days to get going. But let her know about the benefits of lactation consultants, maybe even offer to call a few ahead of time so she'll have a list of resources when the baby is here.

Also let her know that breast pumps can be purchase or rented (from an LC or hospital). She can pump milk so that her husband or anyone else can feed the baby. Her husband can still be involved with the process. At feeding time, he can be the one to bring the baby to Mommy. Then he can burp and change baby when they switch sides. My hubby was also good about always bringing a big glass of water and a small snack when it was time for me to go to work.

In a healthy mom, there is NO reason not to breastfeed. All of the traditional things you hear about (milk supply, nipple problems, it hurt too much) are easily dealt with when you have a lactation consultant or other experienced person help you out. Too often nurses pediatricians encourage parents to switch to formula - because it's easier for THEM, not because it's the best for the baby.

The La Leche League is a great resource for breastfeeding mothers. You should check out their website for all sorts of information on why breastfeeding should be the only feeding option for a baby, as well as the types of help available if she runs into a speedbump.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! Next time I talk to her I'll be ready to give her some sound information! I'll let you know what happens. ;-)

Honestly I would remind her not of the bonding but how much easier and convenient it is. I would love to sit here and talk about how great the bonding experience is (because truly nothing is better than having them look at you while you are holding them that way) but the fact is after a while the convenience of it is what is great. The middle of the night you don't have to make a bottle it is ready, you don't have to wash a bottle it is already clean and you don' have to worry about too much air getting in their bellies and hurting them.

But hey it is something that she will learn, and just because she is set on one thing doesn't mean she will follow through with it. Think back to your first child and all the plans you had made to do just this or just that and most of it went out the window when you realized that honestly some things aren't that important and others really are.
