The focus of our trip...
We just returned from a brief vacation in the Florida Keys. It had been two years since our last official vacation and now I remember why. They really need to find another word for "vacation" when you bring young children with you. More along the lines of: Away From Home Test of Endurance. Actually the trip was great, probably since my expectations were set appropriately- about a notch above terror. It's not always to always be on your game on the road with youngsters but overall it went remarkably well.
The Cheeca Lodge was a beautiful full service resort. And they aren't kidding on the full service bit. As a part of our arrival tour, the guide noted, "And we even have a small cemetery on property!". "Do many of your guests not survive their stay?" I asked. The guide just smiled. As if I was kidding.
Most importantly the resort had automatic doors and elevators. This is where we spent most of our free time since Jack is obsessed with both and we often entertain him on the weekends by taking him to the mall to ride elevators and open doors. To find some at his disposal 24/7 was a complete bonanza for him, I doubt any of the other guests opened the doors unassisted by Jack for our entire stay. He would bolt upright in the middle of the night and say (loudly) "Is it morning now? Is it time for auto-toe-mat-ic doors?!" This would be ok if he wasn't tall enough to reach the top security lock on the door, which meant that I often heard the (previously locked) door slam shut and would find Jack headed for the elevators. Aren't vacations relaxing?!
I probably should have packed more Tylenol since slipping him a dose before the flights made him all laid back and giggly as if he had just had a martini, but I'm still a bit of a novice when it comes to appropriately planning the sedation of a preschooler.
