The Clock's Ticking On Growing Up
0 |
I read study recently that showed that people became increasingly depressed as they neared 40 when their unhappiness peaked, and after 40 their moods improved. The theory was, that as people close in on 40, they are becoming more and more aware that any or all of their dreams will not happen, which is upsetting. Then they hit 40 and they decide "well, that's that, I better make the best of it".
As I close in on my mid-30's I am beginning to get hints that certain things are unlikely to happen. For example, I always had an idea that it would be fun to work for the FBI as a special agent, with this adventurous life of danger and intrigue. I hadn't totally and consciously ruled it out as a possibility, despite my decidedly suburban existence, and despite the fact that I would probably die of a heart attack within the first 3 hours on the job from the stress. But in taking stock recently, I think that I am going to have to cross it off the list. It may seem like an easy one, but it's a little strange to do it. It's an acknowledgment that things are off the table, and I'm not totally sure I'm willing to concede a life of possibilities yet, no matter how remote. There's still time for me to be discovered as some exotic countries lost princess, right?
