The Best Game You Can Name
2 |
Three years ago, my sister took me to my very first National Hockey League game. The Washington Capitals beat the Philadelphia Flyers and I fell in love with ice hockey. It's not just the skating that thrills me, although that's amazing in and of itself, it's the teamwork, the speed and the skills behind the sticks that really make the game memorable for me. I love the suspense of the shootout, the passion behind the power play, and especially the excitement of a great goal.
In addition, the whole experience of a game is just plain fun. I love the silly audience participation stunts; I love singing The Hockey Song and doing the chicken dance. I always hope the Kiss Cam focuses on Joe and me; I always root for both Mites on Ice teams during intermission. If I can't get to a game, TV is almost as good. In fact, I think I have a little crush on Versus announcer Bill Clement, also known as Clement, Clement, Hands of Cement.
Is there hockey in your town? It doesn't have to be the NHL -- it could be minor league hockey, college or high school hockey, or even youth hockey at the local ice rink. As Stompin' Tom sings:
"Oh, the good old hockey game is the best game you can name,
And the best game you can name, is the good old hockey game!"
Try it; then tell me if you like hockey too!
