Road Games

"Are we there yet?"
Ah, the ubiquitous query of children on road trips! It's easier for parents these days, what with DVDs and MP3 players and other electronic distractions.
If you don't have the advantage of such high-tech solutions to travel boredom, may I suggest a few simple games that my folks used to play with us?
"How Many Miles?" is easily adaptable to any destination. Every summer my family went to the beach. To get there, we had to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Our task was to spot the Bay Bridge signs along the way and report on how many miles remained before we got there.
"Count the Cows" only works if you're driving through the countryside, but you could substitute other things for the cows. My sister had one side of the road; I took the other. The object of the game was - you guessed it - to count the cows we saw and keep a running total. If we saw a goat, our total reverted to zero. As you might expect, we didn't see many goats!
For older kids, try "License Plate List," where we listed allĀ the out-of-state license plates that we saw. The day I spotted an Ontario plate was memorable!
So if the DVD player breaks or you simply cannot stand one more chorus of the Wiggles, try an old-fashioned road game.
It just might work!
