Inky has a little snow on his back
We have an unofficial pet. He's a little black cat who lives in back of
our house, the son of a mamma cat who has since disappeared.
We've named him Inky.
Joe started feeding Inky last fall, hoping to tame him enough to get
him to the vet. At first, he would ate at night, creeping up on our
back stoop after we went to bed.
One day I was sitting at the computer when I glanced outside. Inky
jumped up on the stoop and stared right inside, as if to say "So
where's the chow?"
As winter came on, we worried about him out in the cold. Joe bought a
little igloo and put an old Army blanket inside. He spread some hay
under the stoop and set up a pet heating pad, all to ensure that our
little friend would stay warm.
Now Inky comes just inside the door to eat. When he gets hungry, he
peers inside, looking for his dish. He even meows, scolding us when he
thinks we're falling down on the job. He'll lie on the stoop and groom
himself in sunny weather.
Unfortunately, he's still very very skittish when we get too close.
Every time we try, he flies away. So we haven't been able to catch him,
but we will. Even if Inky never becomes a house cat, we can at least
make sure he doesn't father other kittens out here in the wilds of
suburbia.
