Donated food ready for sorting and packing
Yesterday I helped feed hungry families.
How? Along with a group of my colleagues, I spent the afternoon at the
Capital Area Food Bank, the largest non-proft hunger and nutrition
education organization in the DC area. The food bank collects, sorts,
and distributes over 20 million pounds of food to the hungry in the
area. Where does the food come from? Grocery stores, growers,
retailers, and food drives are just some of the donors. The food bank
then supplies food to homeless shelters, soup kitchens, day care
centers, and other agencies.
We packaged individual bags of food for a neighborhood center, which
will distribute them to the hungry among us. Even though our work was
hard and serious, we still had fun. We brought our own music, and we
sang and danced as we sorted and packed each bag with a can of
tomatoes, a can of vegetables, a pasta or rice item, a pantry item, a
snack, a drink, and a diet product. I even juggled cans of Vienna
sausage!
You can help prevent hunger too. Just by donating a bag of rice, a can
of fruit or vegetables, or a box of pasta or cereal, you're helping a
child or a senior citizen or a family eat. As Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. said:
"Everybody can great because anybody can serve. You only need a heart
full of grace. A soul generated by love. And you can be that servant."
