My broken Razr gave me the excuse to make the upgrade

My love of Apple and computers began in the mid-80s, when I'd spend hours drawing pictures in MacPaint on my parents first Macintosh.  Since then, I've been through many computers, cell phones, laptops, PDAs and more.  I confess; I'm a Mama with a techie/geek streak.

Baby and phone do not mix well
So recently, when my pretty pink Motorola Razr broke (yes, there is a repercussion to letting your 9-month old use your cell phone as a teething toy), I found myself over at the local AT&T store browsing for a new phone.  I stood in front of the Blackberry and Treo's thinking, "the time has come."  With a web-business that keeps me busy much more time than I had ever intended, it was amazing I resisted the urge for so long.  So many times I've waited in car pick up line thinking, "I could be checking my Blackberry right now.  If I had one."

And then.  Imagine one of those scenes out of the movies.  Me.  The Blackberry section at the AT&T store.  Suddenly the clouds give away to a ray of light, that "ahhh" sound like the light is coming straight from heaven, and behold, the iPhone display enters into my peripheral vision.

Don't tell my husband
Fifteen minutes later, I was walking out the door with my new iPhone in hand.

Call it what you will (expensive, a toy, a Blackberry on Steroids) - but the bottom line is that it's one cool gadget that's incredibly user friendly.  And for today's busy Mom-on-the-move, I find the iPhone is the way to go.  It's simple, cute and fun (yet chock-full of many useful features) and I had it down in a few minutes with the iPhone.

What do you get?
So yes, it's a phone first.  You have your standard, run-of-the-mill contact list and a means of calling your numbers.  But not only is it cooler looking, but there are so many added features beyond the phone aspect.  There's the weather (customized to your area), and the calendar, and the email that all syncs up to your server/email/computer.  Which is all available on a Blackberry/Treo.

But with the iPhone, everything is done by a touch screen.  A big touch screen.  The digital keyboard reminds me of one of those large print edition books you can find at the library - perfect.  Even my fingers felt too big for typing on my husband's Blackberry - I'm still in awe as I watch him typing away at rapid speed.  The iPhone keyboard is much more my speed - large print for my fingers which are always in a hurry.

You can "drag and drop" items on the phone - such as you would on your computer, only with the touch screen once again.  And when you're browsing the web on your iPhone, if you don't like looking at it vertically (up and down on the phone), you can flip the phone horizontally and the image flips with you.  (So cool!)

And let's not forget the added functionality of the iPod.  Right now the iPhone only comes in 4GB and 8GB.  I got the 4GB - so I have to pick and choose what I put on it from my 30GB iPod but so far so good.  I've been able to add a couple workout mixes, some Wiggles music and a couple Jimmy Neutron episodes for those extra-long restaurant dinners when the kids are going nuts.  What more could a Mom need when she's out and about?  (Diapers are so over-rated.)

Overall
I love it.  The iPhone is such a fun addition to my everyday life.  I bought two carriers for it too -- one for protection in my diaper bag (Goldfish crumbs, sippy cup leakage, it's a war zone in there) and one for the gym.  In fact, I'm especially excited for the gym now - where I'd have an iPod and phone on the treadmill or elliptical with me, I now only need one item.
