Sunday football: growing up sports fans

My little Eagles
When I met my husband almost 9 years ago, I didn't know a first down from a touchdown. But then I met hubby, moved to Philadelphia and everything changed. Being an Eagles fan and living in Philadelphia is like being a human and needing to eat. It just is. Okay well that may be a *slight* exaggeration, but Philly's a town with a ton of heart and spirit and one of the times it's the most prominent is during football season. On any given game day in the Philadelphia region during football season, you'd be hard pressed to go out in public without seeing a dozen or more Eagles logos and jerseys walking around. And when they lose, forget it. The upset in the air is almost palpable.
So after I realized my husband and I were "it", I knew that Sundays would be about football. And although I was never into football, I was always a team sports person so learning to be an Eagles fan wasn't any stretch in my mind. And now, 9 years later, I've learned both the game and the spirit to participate in the weekly fall and winter Sunday afternoons. In fact, I've entered my first fantasy football league this year in an attempt to be more vested in our weekend activities: last year and watching my husband pour over the stats on his computer drove me nuts. This year, I'm all-in. (And ironically, we played each other the first week - I won! Woohoo.)
It's not surprising my boys are getting involved in the football frenzy. Of course, the baby's too young to understand, but not too young to be initiated into the weekly ritual. They both have new jerseys this year as everyone can see from the photos. Big brother's hand-me-down from when he was a baby was a Terrell Owen's jersey (former Eagles player with a bit of an attitude) which is of course not anything I'd put on my baby now. (Sorry Dallas fans.)
We spent last Sunday in our family room with the Eagles playing and I have to say, my 3 1/2 year old knows more about football than I did a few years ago. He cheers and boos at all the right times (prompted by Dad, of course) and loves to toss a football around in between plays. And I don't know who was more sad when they lost last weekend - my husband or my 3 year old.
It's all probably a little silly, I suppose. But it's also a ton of fun. It's a great family activity and I just know it'll give both my boys memories for years to come of Sundays with the family, watching the Eagles, chilling out at home with friends and family.
Someday we'll take both the boys to a game too. Eagles fans are a bit on the crazy side though, so we'll definitely wait until they're old enough to handle that excitement. Until then, it'll be our house and friends' houses for good times and cheering all around.
Go Eagles!
