The Floppy Seat: protecting baby from germs

Baby waits for lunch in a restaurant high chair

Since having kids, I've changed my germaphobe ways.  Prior to kids, I'd carry little anti-bacterial soaps everywhere.  I wouldn't touch something if it fell on the ground, and I used paper towels to open handles of public doors.

Two kids later, there are certain things I'll give on.  Because unless you're SuperMom, I find that everyone has to give a little on the germ thing - it's just the nature of the job.

So there's certain things I've given in on and no longer mind.   But here's what I won't budge on:  the sick germs that can so easily be picked up in public.  Kids are magnets for it and we've picked up a whole host of illnesses from public venues:  pink eye, the stomach virus, hand foot and mouth disease and more.  So second child or not, I won't give on what I allow the baby to touch when we're out in public.

He mouths everything, especially the shopping cart.   So I've recently pulled out an old product that I liked a lot the first time around:  the Floppy Seat cover.  I got it at Babies R Us and although you can find shopping cart covers all over - and ones that are undoubtedly cuter looking, here's what I especially like about the Floppy Seat:  it's affordable and it's nicely padded.

The padding feature was crucial for us, especially with my first son who was so large that he was out of his infant carrier at 4 months but not sitting up until 6 months.  It posed the dilemma then when I'd go out shopping - where to put him when walking around in a store or when pushing a grocery cart.  The Floppy Seat is well padded so I was able to lay him down sideways in the top of the shopping cart and it worked well to keep him comfortable and secure.

Other notable features:  it rolls up well for storage in your car.  It has two "handles" for easy carrying.  It's machine-washable (really easy, I just toss it in with like colors and it dries fine too.)  And lastly, it can be used in a high chair - which is also great in my book.

So you can find it in Babies R Us, in store or online.  It's currently on sale for $34.99 (normally $39.99)
