Kid-Friendly Find: Wonder Bread
0 |
In 2002, the makers of Wonder Bread claimed it was a good source of calcium and, therefore, helped children's minds work better and retain information longer.
If you want to know how well your product is received by mini-consumers, ask a Mom or Dad! As it happened to me,in the cereal aisle, during a rather large grocery run:
"Wow, that's a lot of bread!"
I turned my attentions away from the fruit roll ups and I'm sure the young woman caught me frowning. She pointed at the six loaves of white bread precaroiusly placed on the shopping carriage's seat, in between two bunches of bananas and two dozen eggs.
"Oh...well...four kids makes for a lot of sandwiches!"
I didn't bother telling her that, in my house, six loaves of bread wouldn't last the week - I was distracted by the fact that she was turning white and looked as if she was going to faint right there in front of the instant oatmeals.
"You've got FOUR kids - you must spend a fortune on food!"
I wasn't shocked by her candor - I've got kids, you know - in fact, I found it startingly refereshing.
"Yep - kids cannot live by bread, alone!"
She checked out my carriage, shook her head and ended the pleasantries by blowing out a long, "WHEW!"
Yeah, it was very obvious that I was shopping by proxy, judging by the cocoa puffed, jelly rolled and artificially sweetened items out-numbering anything producing natural sugars or the color green, naturally.
"You know, it just blows my mind!"
Again, with the chit-chat!
"What's that?"
She actually left her cart, in the middle of the aisle, and got right in my face.
"Well, it's like, just me and my boyfriend, and like, it seems there's never any food in the house and we're like, always shopping and like, spending $200, every time!"
She lost me at "me and my boyfriend" and - though, I actually shuddered when she used the word "like," more than twice in one sentence - I really didn't know how to respond.
So, I glanced into her cart and noticed very little that wasn't labeled "organic" and thought, nope, nothing kid-friendly [read: cheap, tastes good] in there. But, then again, perhaps one day.
"Did you know that Wonder Bread is filled with vitamins and once claimed to be good for children's brains?"
[blank stare]
"I mean, even my eleven-year-old knows anything that contains an ingredient that ryhmes with "gross" actually really does taste good, but is probably very bad for you, too!?!"
I don't think she noticed...that I noticed...that she was frowning, as she turned on her heels and clicked her way toward the bottled water aisle.
"You've gotta try their Whole Grain White - my kids and I really do love it!"
Wonder Bread has been a household favorite since way back when I was a kid - not to mention when dinosaurs ruled the earth, as my kids like to believe - and since I started buying their "whole grain white," it may prove to be the healthiest "kid-friendly find" in my shopping cart, yet!
