Work In Progress: Shifting Sands

Posted March 13, 2007
I'm no stranger to having plenty of unfinished projects on my needles at any given time. Over the next couple of weeks, I plan on introducing you to some of said Works in Progress. I think it's a good idea to keep various types of projects handy for all types of situations. Situational knitting - a telltale sign of a compulsive knitter.

For example, you have your aran wool sweaters for mind-bending, concentrated knitting, your stockinette pullover for… Read More

Interweave Appoints New Editor

Posted March 12, 2007
This weekend, Interweave Knits Magazine announced in a press release the appointment of Eunny Jang as the new fangled editor of this burgeoning publication. Eunny, an insanely talented knitwear designer, technical editor, and writer is a knitting blog hero for her work at See Eunny Knit and is known for her technically-tantalizing and tasteful knitting designs. I appreciate her need to give a good nod towards the tradition of our craft while finding ways of translating knitwear into the context… Read More

Some Serious Swatching

Posted March 10, 2007
I'm a big proponent of proper swatching techniques. If there is one thing that will ensure your finished sweater fits, its a correct swatch to show you just how the yarn will behave. When working in stockinette, swatching is a breeze. When working a cable-happy aran, you have to take more care.

I spent a lot of time this week planning this sweater - choosing cable motifs, centering them and figuring how many 'filler' stitches would be appropriate… Read More

Wash Your Woolens

When you're a handknitter, the idea of sending one of your handmade sweaters to the dry cleaner is enough to make you cringe. After I learned the proper way to wash all my woolies, I realized how much better it was to do this type of cleaning at home.

There are a bunch of wool washes out there, some for delicate machine washing and others which are best suited for hand washing. My woolwash of choice is Eucalan. … Read More

Knitty Spring

Posted March 07, 2007
The new issue of Knitty is available with spring patterns here.

Do you know about Knitty? It's a seasonal online publication chock full of design submissions from folks all over. I'm not a huge fan of the publication for the simple fact that there's not much going on for the menfolk. There is, however, quite a range of designs for women, although I feel that the strength of this online magazine lies in its patterns for babies and… Read More

The Lure of the Aran

Posted March 05, 2007
I can only go so long between cable-heavy projects. There's something about the sculptural texture and weight of a thick aran sweater that I'll never tire of. I've been disciplining myself to finish some old projects, but I've had something much too tempting waiting in the closet for months: a full bag of Classic Elite Skye Tweed (one of my favorite yarns) in a deep forest green tweed and Elizabeth Zimmermann/Meg Swansen's pattern for the Saddle Shoulder Aran Cardigan from… Read More

About Me

I am a 24-year-old artist/photographer/knitter living and working in New York. I learned to knit as a child from my mother but only got serious(ly obsessive) about it four or five years ago. You can read more about my work at Brooklyn Tweed.
