Hello, Handspun

By Hand!

I recently acquired some of the most beautiful yarn that has ever graced my stash. My dear friend, and queen of online spinning and dying, Adrian (the mastermind behind www.helloyarn.com) sent me a generous gift of some of her handspun. Hand-DYED and hand-SPUN. This is absolutely a work of art. Pictured is one of three big beautiful hanks that I've been petting meticulously for the last two days.

My resistance finally broke last night as I dropped everything to cast on for my long awaited Baby Surprise Jacket. I think I've already waxed poetic about this ingenious little pattern that, for years, has reigned in the knitting community as king of all baby sweaters. This pattern is definitely one of Elizabeth Zimmermann's crowning achievements and her most prominent piece in a lasting legacy of knitting innovation.

I'm only a few rows in, but I'm enjoying myself immensely. Good luck pulling me away from… Read More

Summer Suggestions: Free Movies

Movie theaters are great places to be in the summer. Cold, dark spaces where we can be hypnotized by big pretty pictures flashing in front of our eyes. I don't know about you but I particularly enjoy the overkill on the AC that is almost guaranteed to cool you down isntantly as step onto those multicolored theater carpets.

If you're a semi-seasoned knitter, you may have also discovered that movie theaters are perfect places to sneak in you… Read More
There are some yarns that I enjoy so much I never tire of babbling about them (lucky you...). Most of my favorite fibers come into rotation every so often in my projects - especially if they have great color support (see my previous post).

I've recently acquired a fresh batch of one of my all-time faves: Beaverslide MacTaggarft Tweed in 'Mountain Mahogany.' (pictured) 100g hanks of fisherman weight, pure Montana wool make me happy. Another thing that makes… Read More

It's My Thing About Colorcards...

Posted May 30, 2007
I have a secret obsession. A secret collection that lurks in a secret binder in a secret bookshelf in a secret room in my apartment. Okay, the secret bookshelf and secret room are exaggerations, but to my knowledge no one knows about the secret binder of which I speak. Funny, since it's a thick 3" binder, bulging at the seams and exploding with multicolored snippets of wools, alpacas, silks and cashmeres.

My color card binder is something of… Read More

Pattern Roundup: Zeebee Hat

Posted May 28, 2007
This installment of the Pattern Roundup brings you a pattern that is hot off my test needles.

A hat that knits up very quickly and is very interesting-ly. The Zeebee pattern from Schmeebot is a hat worked in garter stitch. This hat offers a nice change to your standard cylindrical, in-the-round head topper. This little mind bender is worked from side to side and the crown is shaped with short rows.

I love the pattern because it's… Read More

Stalled

Posted May 26, 2007
My 'Baby Surprise' plans have been stalled since my yarn has yet to arrive (I was expecting it to arrive before the weekend). Such is the lot of a compulsive online wool shopper.

After exhausting the planning stages of the surprise jacket, I've started another small, garter-stitch riddled project that utilizes interesting shaping. And since it's a real scorcher today in NYC, something as small as a hat is about all I can handle. We're still trying to… Read More

About Me

I am a 24-year-old artist/photographer/knitter living and working in New York. I learned to knit as a child from my mother but only got serious(ly obsessive) about it four or five years ago. You can read more about my work at Brooklyn Tweed.
