The School Grind is Making Me Consider Homeschool
1 |
I have been absent a lot in my blogging lately because of some stuff going on at my home. My oldest daughter, who is brillant but has some learning disabilities has been really struggling with school. We found out this summer, through some diagnostic evaluations, that our daughter has a pretty severe learning disability in the area of math. I don't want to go into too much detail for her sake but she is reading at a college level but her ability to do math beyond the 6th grade level is almost impossible for her. I feel awful for her that we did not have some of these evaluations done before her 8th grade year----we did have some evaluations performed but that was a few years ago and this summer we paid for two separate doctors to evaluate Grace so that we would have "back-up" when we went to the teachers to get modifications for our daughter on the lesson plans.
It is like night and day to have a child that learns "differently" versus a child that learns via the "one size fits all" way that most schools teach children. It is simply heartbreaking as a parent to watch your child struggle---when you KNOW they are smart and will have a wonderful life. But school is tough on the kids that learn differently. Some teachers understand these kids and some teachers DON'T. I've watched my oldest daughter lose confidence in herself, year after year. This year is no different. Nothing is as bad as her horrible 5th grade year----where she got it from both ends, from teachers AND she was the target of some totally horrible girl bullies. I've blogged about my older daughter before, here at Family.com, as a child who learns "outside the lines" and has had a tough road the last few years.
The bottom line is that as she continues to struggle this year, my thoughts turn to home schooling. I know I could not do it myself but I see the difference in her, everyday that goes by. She has nice and wonderful friends at her current school and she is able to be very involved. I love that part of things. But she struggles everyday at school, there are days I seriously consider the logistics of doing this.
Anyone who has any advice, thoughts or experience in this area of life? I would love to know and hear what you have to say. I don't mean to be a downer but I wanted to reach out to the readers here to see if anyone has any input or resources.
Some of the resources and experts that I find helpful for my experience with a child with learning differences are as follows:
Would love know what has worked for you. Thanks and I've missed you guys!
