Motherhood is Not Just a Job...It's an Adventure

Some Days You Have to Throw Out the Planner

In my years of being a "working mother" I've learned to balance like a circus clown.  Motherhood is an adventure and you have to be resourceful in order to make it work.  The way I look at it, it's not always pretty but the job gets done.

The events of this typical workday are laid out for your reading pleasure.  I am sure that every single one of you has had the kind of day I’ve had today.  The don’t tell you about days like this in the “Mommy” books.

8:45 am - Take daughter to re-check appointment at Doctor’s office. Am running late due to the fact my car is acting funny.  Get to the doctor’s office and while we are waiting, my cell phone keeps ringing. The doctor’s office has a strict “no cell phone” use policy, with good reason.  While we wait, I sneak into the restroom of the doctor’s office to make calls and text people since I am tied up.  See the pictures I’ve posted on the site of the office restroom where I conducted business.

After the second “sneak away” the nurse is on to me, so I cool it, put my phone on vibrate until my daughter’s appointment is over.

9:50 am
- Drive my daughter back to school and I have a three-way call with a client.  Call wraps up at 10:10 and I have another call scheduled for 10:15am.

10:15 am - My daughter (who I just dropped off) calls me from school.  She threw up at school. I arrange to get her at 11 am.

10:17 am - I am two minutes late for my phone meeting. I am on that call and get that taken care of, make other calls, return emails.

10:55 am - My car will not start. Won’t turn over, battery is dead. In a panic, I call my dear friend, and Family.com blogger "Princess Peg". She drops what she is doing and rescues me.  She takes me to my daughter’s school and takes us back home.  I am lucky this a.m. because she is close by and not in her usual location.

By lunch time, I am brain dead.  I know that it's really shallow but one of the things that stressed me out  most was that I might miss my highlight appointment.  Sadly, after getting my daughter all settled and set up, I was completely crazed because I had a hair appointment this afternoon -- and "mommy needs her highlight appointment."  I have my priorities, you know.  I don't make many of them so it's something I look forward to.

The day ended up okay with my daughter feeling better, my car starting and I made my hair appointment.  hank goodness for friends, cell phones and for the fact I can write about days like today here at Family.com!

**Note:  I use the term “working mother” in this post because anyone who says stay-at-home moms don’t work wouldn’t last a day staying home with kids.  Every mother is a working mother.
