Movies Help the Winter Blues

It is 13 degrees today.  It's cold, I'm crabby and so are the kids.  February stinks because it's cold, grey and all I can think about is sun and fun.  I can't make time move any faster, so I try to do what I can to ease the "cabin fever" of my family.

Huddle Up for a Family Movie Night

Our family loves movies and we love to watch them together.  Of course, each person has a different idea of what makes a movie great so we take turns picking movies to watch on "Family Movie Night".  We try to have a family movie night once a week.  We make a time and turn off the phone, turn down the lights and escape from the cold weather into a good movie.  Here are some of the recent picks for Family Movie Night at our house.

Sydney White -- Modern day "Snow White" tale with Amanda Bynes.  Great movie, great message and Amanda Bynes is really great.  The story has some modern twists that make it great movie watching for kids and adults.  I loved the movie and both of the girls gave it a "thumbs up".  Here's a review of Sydney White for further reading.

Elizabeth the Golden Age
-- Cate Blanchett is up for an Oscar for her role as Queen Elizabeth.  I loved the first movie and was very disappointed that Cate Blanchett lost the Oscar for "Elizabeth".  This movie has parts that are not exactly "family fare" but we fast forwarded those parts for our younger daughter.  The movie shows what a strong woman and great leader Elizabeth was.  Great example of an historic role model for girls.

My husband is the only man in the family and he gets his picks for Family Movie Night too.  The rule is that everyone takes turns choosing the movie.  Sometimes it's teen fare, sometimes it's historical.  It all depends on who is picking that week.  My husband loves action flicks as well as a good epic movie.  It was my husband's pick last week and we watched Lord of the Rings: Return of the King again the other night. I never get tired of this movie, although it has some scary parts for younger kids.

As a child of the 80's, some of my picks for movie night have been my old favorites.  I love comedy and especially really SILLY humor.  I made my girls fans of Wayne and Garth, after making them watch Wayne's World.  The movie is STILL hysterical, even now.  Wayne and Garth made the classic flick in 1992 and my kids thought it was great.

The purpose of Family Movie Night is to hang out as a family and laugh, cry and escape the winter blues together.  For more suggestions for your Family Movie Night, Princess Peg has a review of another good "girl" movie for teens, go here to read her take on "Pride and Prejudice".
