Establish Teen and Tween Online Rules Based on YOUR Child

Here is the second part of an Interview with Anastasia Goodstein, author and expert on teen and tween behavior with technology and onine. Goodstein wrote one of the best books I've read on teen/tween behavior, "Totally Wired: What Teens and Tweens are Really Doing Online".
The first part of my talk with Anastasia focused on a recent study that had some new information about Online Safety. Despite the gloomy headlines, the news is not ALL bad. Some of it is good news.
Anastasia Goodstein's approach to online safety and teen behavior is based in common sense, which is refreshing. Here is a short example of why I believe parents should listen to her. Goodstein makes it clear that there is no "one size fits all" approach:
"I’ve written quite a few pieces offering tips for parents - people love 5 or 10 easy tips. But what I’ve realized, especially not being a parent yet myself, is that it’s not that simple. Advice like keeping the computer in a central space may work for some parents but not all parents. Everyone’s child or teenager is different as is your relationship to your children. Whether you are more or less restrictive really depends on you and your teen. Given that, here are just some questions to ask yourself before you decide how to engage with your tween or teen around their internet use."
She says that there are some questions to ask yourself before you decide how to engage your teen or tween about their internet use. Questions such as:
- How is your child doing in school?
- Has your child exercised poor judgment in the past?
- Is your child showing signs and symptoms of depression?
- Is your child struggling with eating disorders?
Anastasia's website, Totally Wired, has some excellent resources for futher reading on this subject. I have a link below to a great discussion guide she offers on her site. Parents can download the guide and customize the guide to reflect your family and your child. Here is a final word from Anastasia:
"The idea is that based on your knowledge of your child and your involvement in their offline life, you can adapt that information to how you approach your involvement in their digital lives"
