Hi fellow moms-of-princess-adoring children :) I'm so excited to be guest-blogging here at the center of the Princess universe. My name is Sabrina and my daughter is 5 and she loooooves Princesses. Actually our little girl's emotion for princesses is so strong that "loves" doesn't even really cover it.
At first her princess-obsession caught me by surprise. She had never actually seen any of the princess movies so I couldn't figure out where it was coming from, but it came on suddenly one afternoon: The demands for a pink-only, dresses-only wardrobe. Disdain for blue, black, brown, and all other "boy-color" crayons, crafts, and hair accessories. A fervent need for princess dolls, dresses, and more tiaras than you could shake a wand at. Oh yes, and there were the wands, too: silver, gold, sparkly, jeweled... so many that we started actually naming them. Any of this sounding familiar?
I'll admit that at the beginning I resisted. I was thinking about how yellow blankie started out as a crush and then evolved into a need so dire that once when when "Lello" got stuck in the dryer and we couldn't find "her" it was me having the panic attack, certain no one in our family would ever sleep again. What if this new princess-love developed into an obsession for a certain princess doll, or worse, an *army* of princess dolls and pink stuff? Aaah!
Then our Little Princess started wearing a sparkly, light-up tiara all the time. And, interestingly, everywhere we went it seemed to bring smiles. I think there's something about a little girl feeling like she *should* wear a tiara that's just cute, and in a way empowering too. What does a tiara say if not "treat me like royalty"? And really: When else in your life can you get away with this?
Also, I have to admit that her evolution from "too squirmy to hug" into Little Princess who will sit in my lap for 20 minutes while I brush her hair... has a definite appeal for the Queen (uh, that's me). So I'm leaning into this whole Princess deal, even though some of my friends think it's kooky. I don't care.
I know this phase will end and she'll eventually move on to other obsessions and if I'm being honest, I'll really miss it. Right now, our Little Princess is reminding me every day that feeling special is worthy, and having someone else paint your toenails can be a lot of fun.
