Heading Down East: Maine
0 |
Summer in Maine is fast approaching.
If you've never been there, you have no idea what a madhouse it can be -- or what a lovely place it is to visit in the summer if you can avoid the crowds. If you've been there, you either smugly already have accomodations lined up or you're now in a panic that the best ones are already gone. Such is the appeal of going "down east" to Maine.
I've written a little bit about Maine before -- my favorites are LL Bean (of course) and the little town of Castine on Penobscot Bay. Like many people, I've only really traveled the coast and not inland, which is a shame because there's plenty to do and see across the state.
Frommer's writer Bob Fisher tells us how to uncover Maine's Maritime Heritage with jaunts down a tourism trail that highlights the state's seafaring history. Windjammers and "lobstahs" for everyone!
National Geographic also has an online Down East driving tour that's worth a look.
Whatever you do, book early. Now is better than waiting to figure it out in June or July.
Update 7 May 2007: Frommer's just posted a great article about Maine farms that offer berry-picking, so your family can have its own "Blueberries for Sal" moment.
