I found this helpful Thank You! Your vote will be tallied soon!

This is an ugly child-proofing solution, but we're really glad we did it.

We have railings over a high staircase, like in this photo, and it made me worry terribly when my twin daughters started to crawl.  So we ordered this plastic shield, the "Clear Banister Guard Kit" from One Step Ahead, and my husband and my father installed it one day to humor me.

I think it was a little tricky to install, but they figured it out without too much trouble.

The whole hideous contraption gave me great peace of mind, and I do think it made the whole upstairs safer.  We still didn't feel comfortable leaving the girls unsupervised in the hallway, since no safety solution is ever foolproof, but at least we knew that there was a barrier in case we needed it.

I did try to find the plastic sheet material at a Home Depot, but they said they didn't have anything like it, at least not three years ago.  You can see the components of the shield in the photo, and folks who are more handy than me and my husband might be able to figure out a cheaper alternative.
