My Mother's Day treasures

For my first Mother's Day, my husband made me a painted noodle necklace.  At the time, our girls were only 10 months old and not so much up to making anything too crafty.

Of course, I still have that necklace.  I loved the promise it represented and so looked forward to the wonky gifts of the future, those strange things fashioned out of toilet paper rolls and paper plates.

That future started this Mother's Day morning.

They clambered up the stairs, Dinah carrying a giant green balloon with flowers on it and Djuna carrying a sporty new pocketbook, perfect for day-tripping.  They were thrilled to show me something inside the pocketbook -- two painted heart-shaped pins made out of salt dough, one pink and one purple, both encrusted with what I'm sure must be very valuable, sparkly gems.  The girls told me they are "jewels."

"I MADE it for you, Mama.  I MADE it," Dinah said, very impressed with herself.

And after that, we went to the beach, which was too windy and cold for swimming.  We dug in the sand, rode the Ferris wheel, ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and came back home.  Dwayne and I even got to sip coffee and chat, uninterrupted, while the girls slept in the car.

But the most amazing moment of the whole day is the memory of the girls stomping up the steps at the crack of dawn, so excited to share the perfect treasures they had made.
