Is it just us, or is it extremely satisifying to discover a great, under-the-radar movie? It really is. And it's super extremely satisfying to tell everyone you know (plus loyal blog readers who feel like family to us -- wink, wink) all about it -- without giving anything away, naturally.

"Son of Rambow" is our latest must-tell-everyone-about-it fave. If you grew up on classic kid fare like "The Goonies" or "Stand By Me," you're probably like us in wondering where all the movies about high-spirited (read: rapscallion-esque) kids have gone. It seems like all the youngsters in movies lately are too well-behaved. We like mischief-makers, and the two leads in "Son of Rambow" fit the bill perfectly.

If you haven't heard about it, the simple storyline is this: When young Will Proudfoot, a member of the Brethren -- a religious sect that forbids music, television and movies -- forms a chance friendship with mischievous Lee Parker, he sees his first movie: "Rambo: First Blood." Amazed, Will's imagination opens wide and film-obsessed Lee casts him as the "star" of his own action epic. When more kids at their school -- including super-cool French exchange student Didier Revol -- get involved, things get sticky.

What the premise makes for is a film packed with not only hilarious moments, but plenty of feel-good coming-of-age bonding.

When we saw it this weekend, the theater was filled with parents taking their older children and their friends. Said one kid leaving the theater, "I wish they would make more movies like that."

So do we.

Question: What's your family's favorite under-the-radar gem?
