Queen Bees or Mean Girls?

The Queen Bees at rest ... Photo by Janet Van Ham/Nickelodeon
I confess, I'm not much for reality television but when the preview disc for Queen Bees crossed my desk, I was instantly intrigued.
I've always had an affinity for teen fare like Mean Girls (and its much darker predecessor Heathers). You know, the kind of stuff where young girls figure out that popularity at any cost isn't always worthwhile.
The new reality show, airing The N, is up the same alley. Seven girls -- who believe they're competing to be judged the biggest diva -- arrive to learn that someone they know thinks they're too mean, self-centered, materialistic, (choose-an-unflattering-adjective-here). Instead, to win the show's $25,000 prize, the girls have to complete a personality makeover.
I watched the debut episode and was instantly hooked: The girls are given a few hours to prepare for a beauty pageant. (Yes, I heard many cries of "That's not enough time for me to get ready!") When they arrive at the pageant, all the judges are blind. The girls seem unable to understand how someone can judge them without seeing them.
Hidden cameras track their movements in the house, recording every catty moment. The girls also meet weekly for sessions with Dr. Michelle (of Tyra show fame) to explore why they're so darn mean. America's Next Top Model winner Yoanna House hosts.
I'm all in and putting my bets on either Camille -- who's nasty to her sweet fiancé but seems to be genuinely afraid of hurting those she loves -- or Brittany -- a self-proclaimed socialite who rose from not-so-cool status to her current name-dropping ways. I'm guessing she brags because she's really insecure.
The show is definitely for teens but hopefully is the kind of thing that will teach wannabe queen bees a lesson or two.
Queen Bees debuts on The N at 9 p.m. ET/PT Friday, July 11. Check out the show's official website for more information.
Do you think this is the kind of show you'd watch with your daughter? What movie or television show do you think has done a good job dealing with cliques and popularity?
