I didn't get to go to the Emmys and I didn't get to a Disney showcase yesterday where the studio talked about its many upcoming projects. But, even without my presence, the Emmys -- I think -- went great, and Disney's announcements are exciting times 100. Johnny Depp, everyone's favorite loopy pirate, figures prominently in several of the studio's new flicks.

Here's the rundown:

  • A fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie is in the works, with Johnny Depp reprising his Jack Sparrow role.
  • Depp will also play Tonto in a feature film version of The Lone Ranger.
  • Most exciting to me: Depp has signed on to star as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland! Holding the mantle as one of my favorite books of all time, with Burton as one of my favorite directors of all time, Alice will be shot using 3-D and the kind of performance capture technology used for films like The Polar Express and Beowulf.
Depp made an appearance at the event dressed as Jack Sparrow, but wearing the Lone Ranger mask.

Also coming up:

  • Oprah Winfrey will voice the mother of the princess in Disney's The Princess and the Frog. The new princess movie will be old-school, using hand-drawn animation. The new-school touch? The main character, Princess Tiana, be Disney's first African-American royalty, voiced by Anika Noni Rose. The film is set in New Orleans' French Quarter during the Jazz Age.
  • Jim Carrey is doing his first Disney flick, another 3-D, performance capture outing: A Christmas Carol, with Carrey playing a number of roles
  • Cars 2 is moving up on the schedule. Originally slated for release in 2012, it will now be released in 2011.

At the presentation, Disney screened all of Bolt, its November 21 release. Check out more on Bolt in our Fall Family Movie Guide.

Which of Disney's upcoming flicks are you most excited for?
