Because money doesn't grow on trees
Valentine's Day
0 |
Because it falls right on the heels of our anniversary, David and I have never really paid much attention to Valentine's Day as a romantic holiday. We usually buy each other cards and he might pick up a box of my favorite See's Candy (Butterscotch Squares and/or Milk Chocolate Bordeaux's just for the record), but other than that, we don't do much. It's an impossible night to find a babysitter and even if we do find one, the restaurants are all busy and over-booked and frankly, we're not dating anymore. We've been married long enough that there is zero pressure for extra romance on Valentine's Day. In fact I remember the last time we went out to dinner on Valentine's Day. I was a couple months pregnant with Alex, constantly nauseated and the only salads they had on the menu involved soft cheese and raw eggs. I think I went straight to dessert. Since then, we've skipped it.
But I do have fun making the day special for the kids. We always make it a point to go out and purchase one of those hideously gigantic cards for Daddy. I let Alex draw whatever he wants inside the card and sign his name in giant letters. This year I imagine it will involve glitter glue and oil pastels, his two current favorite art supplies.
I'm not sure what the protocol will be at his new Montessori school. Last year Alex was more excited to give his school friends the Power Rangers valentines he had picked out than he was to eat all the conversation hearts he received. At this school, they don't allow superheroes. It sounds funny, but apparently it's against the Montessori philosophy, which is meant to be calming and quiet. My guess is we'll have to make our own Valentines, which sounds like more fun to me anyway. I hope the boy won't remember last Valentine's Day and be disappointed. If he is, I guess both of his grandmothers will be receiving some Power Rangers Valentine's Day cards.
This year, it might even be fun to host a little Valentine's Day card making party here. I could put out some art supplies, make some heart shaped cup cakes and let the kids make a big mess. Might be fun! So far I've been able to keep myself away from the adorable Valentine's Day supplies aisle at Target and I know that won't be possible for me if I host a party, so that's something to consider. Heart shaped plastic glitter plates here I come!
