The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain

The kids love to watch the rain fall on the patio
Guess what? IT'S RAINING! Right now! Just like it has been for almost a month now! We had a lovely, blue-skied weekend, but the rain is already back again, this time with giant, splattery drops that fling themselves sideways, kamikaze-style against our windows and sound like hail, but technically aren't. I'm already learning that there are lots and lots of different types of rain besides, you know, rain. The words, "it's raining" have suddenly taken on about a million new meanings for me.
So far I seem to be doing just fine with it. The week after Alex's birthday party, I pulled up the weather on my computer and when it showed rain forecasted for literally every single day for the foreseeable future, it filled me with a tiny bit of WHAT THE HECK WERE WE THINKING MOVING UP HERE. Fortunately, it passed quickly when I realized that just because a forecast includes rain, that doesn't mean it will be raining every minute of that day. Not at all. Not that I'm saying the sun shines with regularity of any kind, but it does peek through occasionally. Enough, really for this California girl.
The more reliable coping mechanism I have is the unbecoming fact that I'm not really an outdoorsy person. I like being indoors. I'm not the least bit frustrated that I'm not able to go out and take a hike or ride my bike because those aren't things I'd look forward to doing even on the most beautiful of days. (Admittedly, I don't even OWN a bike.) So staying in the house and listening to the pitter patter of the rain is not a problem. I actually enjoy it.
I think it's cute the way they always creatively double-bag the newspaper even if it's not raining in the morning and the fact that it's so often rainy and sunny in the same sky at the same time. The kids love to splash the rain out of their Tonka trucks onto the patio every day. The rain was meant to be the exception to the rule, the only BAD thing to detract from an otherwise AWESOME place to live and the truth is, so far it's only added to our experience here.
Of course I'm writing this post in October and October in Vancouver, WA is basically December in Northern California. I've been through, what, thirty California Decembers, so this is a breeze. Just ask me again in January, when the days are short and dark and it's Lake-Tahoe-cold and we'll see how I'm doing.
