March 17 isn't just St. Patrick's Day... this year, it marks exactly one month until Tax Day. That's right, this year Tax Day, traditionally April 15, fell on a Sunday. In keeping with IRS rules, that means that Tax Day would move to the next business day which would be April 16... only this year, due to holidays in New England the DC area, the IRS has extended tax day yet another day so that if falls on April 17. You have two extra days to file.
If you're like me, busy rushing around with work and children, you might not have been able to get your tax information together. Even though I still have a month, I'm not terribly optimistic that I'll be finished in time. In order to avoid any penalties for late filing, I went ahead and requested an extension. It's easy enough to do - just fill out a form 4868 before the due date (the form is available on the IRS web site). Of course, if you're filing for an extension, remember that an extension is only for the time to file, not the time to pay. If you owe taxes, your payment is still due on April 17.
