Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all of you!
I used to hear people say that being a mother was the most difficult job on the planet and I would think, "Yeah right, how hard can it be?"
Years later, as the mother of not one, not two but three little ones, I understand why folks say that. It's not that being a mom is one job. It's a bazillion jobs. It's cook, janitor, nurse, therapist, teacher, art instructor, personal trainer, chauffeur, tour guide, decorator, travel planner, fashionista... You name it, practically, and a mom does it. And a number of us do other things as well. We're writers, lawyers, teachers, doctors, nurses, community activists, volunteers... We add to our "mom resume" with so many other things that collectively make this a better planet.
And I think we, as moms, fall into this trap of believing that only those moms who do something extraordinary deserve recognition - those moms that end up on Oprah and Montel because they ran a marathon with six kids strapped to their back or climbed Mt. Everest without a sherpa. Well, here's the thing. Those moms do deserve recognition. But those of us who just quietly plod along raising these amazing little people, we deserve recognition, too. Because in innumerable ways, every day, we're changing the world.
So kudos to all moms, everywhere, who are doing the best job in the world... being a mom!
Happy Mother's Day!
(Psst... An especially wonderful Mother's Day to my own mom, who taught me the importance of love, respect and tolerance. Most importantly, my mom taught me that there is a bigger world out there and encouraged me to go find it, even though it took me away from home. I love you, Mom!)
