Creep, creep, creeping up on us.

I found this helpful Thank You! Your vote will be tallied soon!

Easter came and flew by, it seems.  We had a countdown at our house for days since Amy learned very early on that Easter was on "April the EIGHTH!"  Yes, the volume did grow exponentially with each word.

While that deadline was important to her, there's another deadline that is on my mind these days:  tax day.  Oh yeah, it's creeping up on us.

Fortunately, tax day is an extra two days away this year, and not one as many folks think.  The tax filing deadline is midnight on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 for taxpayers this year.  There are two extra days because April 15 falls on a Sunday this year, and the following day (April 16) is a holiday in D.C. and in Massachusetts (huge filing centers for many taxpayers on the east coast). The IRS initially announced that the April 17 deadline applied just to individuals in the District of Columbia and six eastern states who file at Andover, MA,  but then thought better of it - it was a silly idea to limit it.  Now, the April 17 filing deadline applies to:

  • All 2006 federal individual income tax returns
  • All requests for an automatic six-month tax-filing extension (remember, however, that an extension is only for the time to file, not the time to pay)
  • Tax year 2006 balance due payments
  • Tax year 2006 contributions to a Roth or traditional IRA
  • Individual estimated tax payments for the first quarter of 2007
  • Individual refund claims for tax year 2003, where the regular three-year statute of limitations is expiring
This isn't an exhaustive list.  If you have any questions about whether the deadline affords you any extra time, check with your tax professional or call IRS at 1.800.829.1040.

Just eight days to go...
