A Blip On the Way

In the midst of my vacation planning, I made a trip to the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for my youngest daughter. She is two years old.
Amy has been sick for most of her life. And by sick, I don't mean that she has been plagued by the kinds of serious illnesses that many moms face. It's not cancer, it's not diabetes. Amy has chronic sinus infections. I wasn't aware of how much it has affected our lives until I started putting some history together for her doctor's visit and subsequently doing some investigations of my own online.
It dawned on me that Amy has been sick for every single family vacation that we have taken during her lifetime. Every single one. And twice it has been bad enough that we had to seek out a doctor on vacation - once while in Germany and once while in Maine. Not significant if you're 34 like me. But remember, she's two.
Her size may also be correlated to the infections. It could be a little chicken and egg. I don't know if she gets sick because she's small or if she's small because she's sick. But considering she will be turning three this summer, it is odd to me that she is roughly the same size of my nearly one year old.
She is constantly on antibiotics. She doesn't sleep well anymore. And it makes her cranky during the day.
So. With all of that under my belt, and four consecutive months of sinus and ear infections, we made the appointment at Children's Hospital. The end result is that she is now scheduled for surgery to have her adenoids removed. It is a scary thing for me. I am not a fan of hospitals.
But I keep telling myself that it will be over soon. And this summer may be the first family vacation that we ever take when Amy isn't sick. Let's hope so.
