The Worry-Free Easter

Today I'm thankful about reveling in the joys of kid-dom on Easter.

I know all parents agree that holidays taken on an entire new level of resonance when you have kids. And this Easter I focused on -- in all the festivities -- making sure the kids got a kick out of what they were doing in our preparations... and didn't let them (or me) worry about how the creations looked. Our only mission:  how much fun they could have (and how much fun we could have together).

Before kids, Easter egg artistry for me took on dimensions of plaids, monograms, and silhouettes in deep hues. But on Friday, when the kids and I were knee-deep in hard-boiled eggs, and surrounded by a kaleidoscope of bowls brimming with watery dye, the object was to see how many different colors we could create, combine, streak, and roll on the eggs' surfaces.

I've never seen such beautiful eggs.

As for cakes, which I take very seriously, I let Rocco have his way with decorating the bunny-shaped lemon one I baked for post-Easter dinner. He lathered on swirls of white velvet icing and then, inventively and creatively, he borrowed gum drops, chocolate candies, and jelly beans from his Easter basket to outfit the bunny with eyes, a nose, a mouth, ears, haunches, paws... and buttons.

I haven't tried it yet, but I can already say:  it will be the best cake I've ever had at Easter.
