Advance Planning: Roses for Mom

This time of year here, roses are in abundant bloom. I'm constantly happily amazed (and dazed) at the profusion of different colors you can find in roses. Sultry (which is mango colored); Cabana-stripe (which is, appropriately, yellow-and-red striped); Perfect Moment (which, believe-it-or-not, is the color of a blazing sunset); Dreamweaver (which is a deep pink);  and the Purple Tiger (which is plum and white flecked) ... are just a few in our yard right now.

I bring the subject of roses up because -- with Mother's Day around the corner -- a rose bush is a happy gift that reminds Moms everytime they bloom. Sure, getting a bouquet of roses delivered to her will, by all means, surely be appreciated. But sending her a rose to plant turns your gift into an event.

I've found that Jackson & Perkins (at www.jacksonandperkins.com) has roses to plant that are of  tremendous variety, specials every week, and exclusives. With Jackson & Perkins, you'll receive the rose in bare-root form, which means that you'll need to plant it soon after you receive it. (Don't worry. Directions are included). And you can make that planting a production with Mom (especially on Mother's Day). The bare-root will quickly thrive, leaf, and, soon, you (or your Mom) will start seeing the buds form, soon followed by ruffly roses.

And, in the next post, I'll give some ideas for what those roses can craftily yield -- besides pretty fodder for a vase -- around the house.
