Spring for a Green Host(ess) Gift
1 |
My mother instilled in us four kids the importance of -- when visiting someone for supper, cocktails, or a party -- to bring a hostess (or host) gift. Maybe it's my Southern upbringing, coupled with my Hollywood experiences, but her wisdom in that is continually cemented in my manners... and I've already found myself passing it on to my kids. Bringing a host(ess) gift to a party is just the right thing to do.
The "gift" doesn't have to be expensive, extravagant, or one-of-a-kind. It just has to be thoughtful. Typically, I like going the "consumables" route, because I usually find that families rarely have room for one more thing in their ever-expanding households. While I prefer to give a homemade consumable (like cookies or cake), store-bought ones are fine. But, if you can take the time for a little presentation, you can put a store-bought find into the stratosphere. (O.K., it might not be that impressive, but your personality can give it a very refreshing twist).
During Springtime (and even for this past St. Patrick's Day festivities), I opt for green, leaf-shaped, jellied candies as a host(ess) gift: they're easily found in mall candy shops, or you can buy them in bulk in some grocery stores. (And both adults and kids love 'em). I wrap a few dozen of them in green striped tissue paper, set them in a bubble-dot patterned box from a craft store, and tie it all up with some chartreuse organza. Sure, it’s all very green, but then again... shouldn't Spring be too?
Make sure you attach a note, wishing a "Happy Spring," or "Thanks for the invite." I don't think my Mom meant for host(ess) gifts to be given for extra-credit, but if you're going through the trouble... I won't tell if you go ahead and take the credit.
