"Barbie Learns to Cook"
Mattel has introduced a retro-roarin' good time in the kitchen with "Barbie Learns to Cook," a faithful reproduction of a doll first issued in 1965. I don't think there could ever be enough toys that celebrate hearth and home... particularly one that meshes fashion, style, and domestic arts so groovily.
Beyond the packaging's beckoning ranch house roof is a kitchen setting festooned with a vintage fruit-and-veggie patterned wallpaper, a cookware set, a toaster (with slices), and even a "Barbie's Easy-As-Pie Cookbook," and, of course, Barbie herself.
Though the doll is geared toward those 14 and older, my much-younger daughter seems taken with the playtime concept of wearing a dress to whip up a meal... an activity she recently took up. I kind of like the idea of amping up the dress and class of life at home... for Barbies and Kens alike.
Particularly when you realize we still get to keep the conveniences of today like microwaves, fridges with icemakers, and commercial-grade mixers.
