Sewing Machine + Game Boy = Cool

If you're in the market for a sewing machine, and are looking for a different shape or contour -- but one that still perform all the functions you need -- take a look at mine.

A few years ago, Singer marketed the IZEK, a take on their founder's moniker "Issac," and issued this 150th anniversary commemorative model. Its translucent teal cover and sleek lines won me over initially… but it was the stitches that run off a Nintendo Game Boy that really sold me.

The IZEK's a snap to thread a bobbin or needle and an all-around smooth operator. I've sewn a myriad of prototypes for Practical Whimsy company products -- baby blankets, pillows, tablecloths, aprons -- but I've also followed more complex patterns for shirts and tree skirts, quilts, slipcovers, and even odd-shaped pennants and thick banners for birthday parties.

Plus, I mean look at it: people love it. Some wonder whether it's a computer. I was once asked if I can just pre-program it to whip up any fabric idea come-to-life (like it's some sort of robot which, alas, it isn't). And the Game Boy's cartridge equips it to perform nearly 100 stitches such as zigzag, and even simple monograms and shapes.

I've even persuaded a few guys -- who previously had no interest in sewing -- to give it a try… and you know what? They thought it was pretty cool.

Although one did suggest I should add racing stripes and motorcycle flames on the side.
